“Protecting Oregon’s wildlife, habitat and hunting heritage”
OHA focuses on ensuring sound and scientific management of all wildlife species. Our financial resources are split between wildlife and habitat conservation, and a strong legislative agenda.
Our Beginning:
In February 1983, in the small community of Powell Butte, Oregon, the Oregon Hunters Association was conceived. A small group of individuals sponsored by the Wallowa Elk Hunters met and established procedures, rules, and goals to form a professional, well-organized, statewide organization. Its primary goals were to enhance wildlife habitat, ensure a huntable wildlife resource, and to protect hunter’s rights.
In the early years, membership proved to be the key to success. The first year, 1700 members were signed and proved to be a group of hard workers dedicated to the same cause. Today we steadily increase in numbers. Membership has grown to 10,000-plus in 25 chapters statewide.
Our Structure:
OHA is led by a Board of Directors and four Officers. The Board formulates the policies of the Association and has general charge of the affairs and property of the Association.
Board members serve three-year terms. There are four officers of the Association: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Officers serve a two-year term. President and Vice President are elected by the general membership by ballots distributed in March. All other positions are appointed by the board.
Upon joining OHA, your dues help pay for your subscription to Oregon Hunter magazine and your Oregon Hunter’s Calendar, conservation work, lobbying efforts, and administrative costs. Chapters hold fund-raisers to fund local projects and support statewide conservation efforts; check the Events page to find one near you. 70 percent of the proceeds from chapter fund-raisers are invested at the local level while 20 percent supports state-level work, 5 percent funds the Wildlife and Habitat Superfund, and 5 percent benefits Lands Conservation. All of our net funds are invested right here in Oregon where you live and hunt.
