Rifle Skills for Big Game Hunting

Overview

This one-day course covers the fundamentals of rifle safety and marksmanship for big game hunting. Students will receive ~5 hours of quality coaching from OHA and ODFW instructors who are skilled in gun safety, marksmanship, ballistics, and big game hunting. The course begins with a 45-minute classroom session followed by several hours of no-nonsense, hands-on drills and practice. Students will shoot ~50 rounds of ammunition (combination of 22LR and centerfire). There will be plenty of time for students to ask questions, practice technique, and develop the skills and confidence needed to purchase a rifle and start shooting and rifle hunting on their own.

IMPORTANT:  We highly encourage students to bring a big game hunting rifle and ammunition. Don’t have a rifle? No problem. You can borrow one of ours. We are providing bolt action rifles chambered in .22LR and .243 Winchester and all ammunition required to complete the class.

• Selecting a rifle, optics, and accessories for big game hunting
• Firearm safety rules
• Operation, function, and safe handling of modern hunting rifles
• Mounting, zeroing, and truing rifle scopes
• Marksmanship fundamentals from field positions
• Big game anatomy, shot selection, and terminal ballistics of hunting bullets
• Rifle cleaning and maintenance
• Safe carry, transport and storage of firearms and ammunition

What Is Provided:

• Bolt action rifles for student use, both .22LR and .243 Winchester
• Ammunition
• Ear and eye protection
• Targets
• Water

What You Should Bring:

• Your own rifle! This class is a great opportunity to bond with your gun. If bringing your rifle, you must supply your own ammunition. Bring at least 20 rounds.
• Lunch and extra drinks
• Appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes
• Sunscreen
