Understanding Your Optics: Scopes — Randy Newberg

Buying a Riflescope

Before buying a riflescope, it’s a good idea to think about what kind of hunting you will do. Then, pick a scope that will fulfill most of your needs most of the time. But relax, there is no perfect scope. A second-focal plane scope with variable magnification in the 2-10 or 3-9 range is hard to beat for Western big game hunting. For more experienced riflemen, another option to consider is a first-focal plane scope with dials and reticle subtensions that help with wind and drop holds at long distance. For purchase, sporting goods store such as Sportsman’s Warehouse and Cabela’s are a great place to see and handle a range of riflescopes. Online sources are often even betters, as online retailers offer a wider selection and inventory.

RESOURCES  You can buy scopes online or in stores. Online vendors offer the best selection, inventory, and prices on sporting optics.  In-person stores let you see and handle hunting optics before you buy.

Online

  • Optics Planet  This web company has been around forever and offers some of the best deals and inventory.
  • EuroOptic  Great location for high-end optics and some European brands not available elsewhere. They still have American classics and have closeout and used scopes from time to time.
  • B&H Photo, Video, and Audio  Not just a camera store, B&H carries hunting optics such as binoculars, spotting scopes, and rifle scopes.
  • SWFA  A solid online vendor for scopes and more. They company name is the same as a famous line of precision optics branded SWFA, but the store sells many more brands as well.
  • SportOptics  Great brands and selection at this online vendor.
  • Ebay  Yep, you can buy scopes on Ebay. For years this has been a go-to spot for buying and selling scopes, particularly used models.
  • Gunbroker.com  This online gun auction site sells guns — often with scopes installed — and stand-alone scopes. It’s a good place to check in for mid- and top-tier scopes.

In-Person

  • Cabela’s  One of the largest hunting retailers in the nation. Inventories are not always complete, but Cabela’s has a good selection of scopes. Their used rifle section often has rifles that come with scopes. Also, Cabela’s will install a scope for free if you purchase it there at the store.
  • Sportsman’s Warehouse  A big-box retailer with a small-town feel. Sportsman’s Warehouse has a good selection of hunting optics.
  • Local gun stores. These shops are gems, because you can often find guns and scopes at fantastic prices. Focus special attention on local shops that don’t bother posting their firearms on web auction sites like Gunbroker.
  • Local pawn shops. While you probably won’t find top tier glass at your local pawn shop, you might find something good. Take a buddy and know what you are looking for.
