OHA hatches projects for wildlife and sportsmen

             Oregon Hunters Association chapters spent the spring sowing the seeds for Oregon’s hunting future with a variety of projects aimed at nurturing wildlife habitat and the outdoor interests of the next generation of Oregon hunters. More projects benefiting wildlife and habitat, as well as youth events hosted by OHA chapters, are slated for summer.

BAKER

Update: The OHA Baker Chapter teamed up with numerous outdoor organizations for a youth day at Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area May 31. We will join the National Wild Turkey Federation July 12 for a one-day youth event. Call Paul (541) 523-4122.

Update: Chapter members worked on two eastside aspen projects in June, removing, repairing and constructing fences. We contributed funds toward two irrigation wheel lines for growing crops for elk on the Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area.

COLUMBIA COUNTY CHAPTER

Update: Our board voted to donate $500 to the new OSP wildlife forensic program. We had a clean up day on Tunnel Road May 10. 



EMERALD VALLEY

HARNEY COUNTY

Chapter Meetings: 3rd Wednesday, 6 p.m., Linda’s Thai Room in Elkhorn Club, 457 N. Broadway Ave., Burns. Board of Directors meeting will be held after regular meeting.

Update: Our chapter sponsored a coyote hunt Feb. 16 through Mar. 16, with winners announced at the banquet May 3. An added attraction to the banquet this year was the food bank program, which produced 508 pounds of food, donated to the Harney County Food Bank.

Update: The White River work party did fence mending June 21. Afterward we enjoyed good food, good company, prizes and clay target shooting. The bottle drive is still pumping approximately $100 per month into the Shumway fund.



JOSEPHINE COUNTY

2008 banquet: Held March 8.

Update: Our last work party at Butcherknife Creek took place May 10 (until we begin again next winter). Our chapter donated money to ODFW to purchase two irrigation wheel lines on the Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area near Dayville in Grant County.



KLAMATH

Chapter Meetings: 3rd Thursday, 7 p.m., Shasta View Community Hall (grange), corner of Shasta Way and Madison.

Update: OHA Klamath and Lake County chapter members completed OHA’s 12th annual work party on Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge May 3-4. Over the past 12 years, OHA volunteers have  removed old barbed wire fence that was a hazard to wildlife, planted native vegetation, helped to control non-native plants, and improved camping facilities. We gave money for two irrigation wheel lines for the Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area.



LAKE COUNTY CHAPTER

Chapter Meetings: 1st Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Eagle’s Lodge, Lakeview.

Update: About 60 members of the Lake County and Klamath chapters of the Oregon Hunters Association completed OHA’s 12th consecutive year of helping to improve wildlife habitat and recreational facilities on Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge May 3-4. In June we held our first annual outdoor youth day, a guzzler campout and a highway cleanup.



LINCOLN COUNTY

2008 banquet: We hosted the 25th Anniversary State Convention at Chinook Winds on May 17. More than 460 folks celebrated OHA’s quarter century of service to Oregon’s wildlife, habitat and hunters.

Update: Our chapter donated three radio collars and member Scott Henry donated one collar to ODFW for trapping and transplanting elk. Our chapter donated money to purchase two irrigation wheel lines to grow hay crops for elk on the Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area in Grant County.

Update: Our chapter sponsored a very successful Youth Turkey Hunting Clinic on April 5. We had 160 attendees and 35 volunteers, almost twice as many folks as last year!

PIONEER

Update: Chapter members staffed booths at four gun and knife shows and a sportsman show, cleaned our Adopt-a-Highway road area three times, serviced our guzzlers, and cleaned duck boxes last spring.

Chapter Meetings: 3rd Thursday, The Old Spaghetti Factory, 18925 NW Tanasbourne Dr., Hillsboro. Dinner at 6:30 p.m., meeting at 7:30.

Update: We donated funds for two irrigation wheel lines for growing hay to feed elk on the Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area near Dayville. The board voted to add $1,000 to the reward for conviction of those responsible for shooting and wasting four bull elk in Glendale last winter, and to purchase three shotguns to donate to hunter education. We removed Scotch broom in the Tillamook Forest on May 3.

Chapter Meetings: 3rd Tuesday, VFW Hall. Burgers start at 5:30, meeting at 7.

Update: The OHA Redmond Chapter has begun a 10-year partnership with Central Oregon Quail Unlimited and BLM to improve wildlife habitat on about 300 acres of former agricultural lands along Bridge Creek near Mitchell, and on the John Day River near Clarno in north-central Oregon. We plan to plant and cultivate a variety of crops and native plants to provide food and cover for wildlife. An important aspect of the project is to control noxious, non-native plants. The Redmond OHA chapter is contributing $10,000 to the project.

   The Redmond Chapter donated the initial $6,000 to purchase two irrigation wheel lines to grow hay for elk on the Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area near Dayville, with the remaining $6,000 coming from eight other OHA chapters, the Santiam Chapter Safari Club International and Central Oregon Quail Unlimited.

    More than 70 members of the Redmond Chapter on April 12 planted more than 5,000 native shrubs at Murderers Creek.
